We all like to live in a clean home. What many of us don’t enjoy, is doing the dirty work needed to get rid of a winter’s worth of grime. But it doesn’t have to be hard. Here are some tips and tricks to make spring cleaning your home quick and easy.
Make it a family affair
Spring cleaning gets finished faster when many hands are put to work. So enlist help from everyone in your home to make things sparkle and shine. A few days before the big job, build a playlist of your family’s favourite tunes – the music will help improve the mood.
Inject a little fun into the proceedings by copying a page out of the world of sports and creating a “draft” of cleaning tasks. Write all the required jobs on a big piece of paper, then take turns picking until every task is spoken for. That way, your family can select the jobs they prefer, or make trades to pass unwanted duties on to another person.
If you’re single, or your kids are too young to chip in, it doesn’t have to mean you’re totally on your own. Strike a deal with a sibling or a friend to help each other out. You may just find the two of you make a great cleaning team.
Take a top-down approach
Like many things in life, it’s not easy to start at the top. But when cleaning your home, starting at the top makes the most sense. Begin at the highest point in each room and, moving from left to right, work your way down to the bottom. That way, not only will you be sure not to miss any spots, you’ll also avoid unnecessarily knocking dust onto floors and lower surfaces that have already been cleaned.
Freshen up mattresses with a box of baking soda
Give your mattress a makeover and freshen up your most-used piece of furniture with a fine coating of baking soda. Begin by stripping off sheets, mattress covers, and bedskirts and tossing them in the laundry. This is a good opportunity to flip or rotate your mattress, which will prevent it from sagging. Pour a cup of baking soda into a sieve or sifter and sprinkle a thin layer all over the mattress. Consider adding about a dozen drops of your favourite essential oil – besides being antibacterial, it’ll add a touch of aromatic bliss. The baking soda will draw dirt and moisture out of your mattress, and cut down on unpleasant odours. Leave the mixture on for at least an hour, then carefully vacuum it up. Before putting your bedding back on, tuck some dryer sheets under the mattress – they’ll deliver a fresh scent every time you go to sleep.
If pet hair is a problem in your home, don’t fret. Here’s a simple solution. Slip on a pair of rubber gloves, dampen them with a small amount of water, then run your hands over hairy couches and chairs. Any loose fur will clump up and stick to the gloves, which can easily be rinsed clean. If carpets and rugs are the culprit, use a rubber squeegee to pull hair into piles.
Check the forecast before washing windows
When spring arrives, it’s nice to throw open the windows and let fresh air and sunlight stream in. But take note of the weather before giving your windows the once over. If it’s too sunny and warm, your cleaning solution could dry before it gets wiped off. This leaves unattractive streaks behind. Procrastination may be the enemy of proper cleaning, but it’s okay to wait for a cloudy day before going to work on your windows.
